It’s no coincidence that most people gorge on Thanksgiving, and pack on the pounds because of it. Follow these 13 Survival Secrets to come out on top and unscaithed.

Secret 1 – Stick to the basics

If you’re not sure what to eat focus on turkey, greens, and sweet potatoes

Secret 2 – Slow your ass down

The slower you eat the more you’ll enjoy your food.

Secret 3 – One plate at a time

If you’re like me you love all the Thanksgiving foods so much you’re tempted to grab two plates at a time. Just nab one and you’ll be better off

Secret 4 – Do something active in the morning

Try this when you first wake up

10 Jumping Jacks
10 Push ups
10 Squats
10 Crunches

Repeat 3 times

Secret 5 – Do something active after the meal

Flag football anyone?

Secret 6 – Drink water

Enjoy a glass or 5 of wine (DD?) but make sure you get your water in – 8 glasses per day

Secret 7 – Enjoy the day

Thanksgiving can be filled with a lot of guilt and bad feelings surrounding food. I hereby absolve you of all guilt – have fun!

Secret 8 – Fill your plate right the first time

On the first pass around the table aim for a palm of protein, 2 first fulls of veggies, and a handful of grains

Secret 9 – Kick the soda

If you’re going to have something other than water on Thanksgiving skip the soda. It’s ruined more lives than a brothel

Secret 10 – Have a plan to get back on Track

Leftovers can be deadly. Make sure that you have a plan to get rid of your trigger foods so that your one day feast doesn’t turn into a month of indulgence

Secret 11 – Stay stress free

Someone at your meal you don’t want to see? Avoid them! This is the time of year to be thankful for the people in your life, not stressed because they are jerks.

Secret 12 – Write a list of everything you’re grateful for

Might not sound like a “weight loss” tip, but research has shown that happy people lose weight faster and don’t die as young. Happy people are also thankful people.

Secret 13 – Workout the next day
