Be Great This Year

“You can control time. You can stop it or stretch it or loop it around. You can travel back & forth by living in the moment & paying attention. Time can be your bitch if you just let go of the ‘next’ & the ‘before”
-Amy Poehler

I love New Year’s Eve – There’s serious magic in the air, it lifts my spirits like nothing else, and it makes me believe in time travel. Look closely, in the first week of the year *anything* is possible, and if you look hard enough you can see your life going in any direction you want.

So here’s the thing, if you can time travel and see your life going in any direction you want – what do you want?

It’s the hardest question to answer ever, because it asks you to simultaneously be bold and and completely honest. That’s really, really hard. Especially if you’re answering that question in the quiet of your mind. Your demons whisper “You’re not good enough, you never will, you never have in the past, you couldn’t do it before, why is now any different, you’re not strong enough…”

And to be great, to be honest and live a life that you want to live you’ll have to look at the demons and admit they’re right. You haven’t in the past, you couldn’t do it before, you didn’t have the strength. You have to admit that failing brought you here.

That’s time traveling to the past, and it’s hard. No one likes to admit they they failed, and didn’t do what they set out to do. It’s got to be your first step, because once you’ve admitted that you didn’t succeed last time, you can figure out why and fix it. It’s cliche because it’s true, every failure is simply finding a route to your goal that didn’t work.

So own your failure, then we can get started on building up.

But, if you live in fantasyland and write down a bunch of resolutions that sound an awful lot like last year’s resolutions you aren’t going to be able to do much this year.

You need the goals, you need to time travel forward to New Year’s Eve 2016 and look back on all you accomplished this upcoming year. First live in the past and face where you were successful and where you weren’t.

After that, setting goals become easy.

Then just fill it out with what you want to see this year.

If you do this on the 7th of January you’re too late

Do it now

I’ll leave you with one of my favorite poems, it’s something I read my daughter every night before bed:

Listen to the MUSTN’TS, child,
      Listen to the DON’TS
      Listen to the SHOULDN’TS
      Listen to the NEVER HAVES
Then listen close to me-
      Anything can happen, child,

Ps. Be great this year, you won’t make the world any better by dreaming small
